Homebase = coffee shop
Still in the process of trying to settle down and become a Bostonite, I have been sorely missing my local coffee shop. You know? The place with great coffee, low lights, hipsters/college students and locals, and music from an indie aficionado ipod. The place with sometimes horrible sometimes okay art on the wall that has absolutely nothing to do with Starbuck's and everything to do with everytown's struggling artist. This the same place you run into people you know at and you can bring your computer to for hours of free internet.
Every city has a downtown in the Boston area or a few squares (intersections with lotsa bars and shops) and though you'd think that there would be a plethora of decent coffee shops (I did) the New England Dunkin Donuts Phenomena seems to prevent it. (Side note: Think of DC and how many Starbucks there are - every street corner... its like that EVERYWHERE here with DD.)
Lorna sorely disappointed me with her knowledge of the local coffee shops. Favoring Starbucks in Davis Square even when there was a large and active local coffee shop across the street. Didn't even NOTICE there was a local coffee shop across the street. Even so, I dragged her and Jay last weekend for afternoon coffee and it was swarmed with people. Behind the counter was a huge backroom filled with students and laptops, not budging despite the fact that they have to pay for... GASP... internet!
Well, I have been eyeing a coffee shop reasonably close to my apt right outside of Tufts in Ball Sqr. This morning I got up and after an interlude at the bank (local coffee shops don't always accept credit cards) I'm now typing here on free internet, Damien Rice playing on the speakers, fed with an excellent Bacon Egg n' Cheese Bagel and decent coffee, and quite content with my discovery. I've found my coffeeshop homebase.
